Vinyl siding starter strip placement. Position the starter strip even with the top edge of the chalk line and allow room for corner posts. Remember to make sure the sheathing is smooth before you apply the siding so the siding can be smooth also. Because horizontal siding is by far the most common type used, we focus on its installation here.

Start at the bottom of the wall at one end. Insert the top of the starter into utility trim to keep it straight while nailing it to the wall. Fasten metal starter strip at the bottom of the three walls.

For the remaining vinyl siding panels to be installed correct and level, beginning with the lowest row, you must install the starter strip correctly. Some of these mounting strips are the same for both horizontal and vertical siding. Placement of the strip is typically an inch or two above the foundation.

Position the panels so that the joint lines are staggered. Push up gently until you hear a click. For this reason, manufacturers design it to hang loosely on the nails rather than to be tightly nailed like wood siding.

Which probably means you will end up having some seams to deal with. Of the starter should be 1/4 (6.4 mm) above the final scallop placement. On the front side of the dormer, install a preformed outside vinyl corner piece from under the eave to the roof line, angling the cut in the back for a tight fit.

Make sure starter is level and plumb. Nail it to the wall. The starter needs to be installed level with the bottom of the wall.

Starter strip (7:08) panel installation begins with a starter strip. Vinyl siding is found on a large percentage of homes built today. Drive in nails to remove excess play in the starter strip.

The piece of siding located on the contrary side to the attaching strip, which locks into the preceding piece of siding or trim. Vinyl siding tends to expand and contract considerably with temperature changes. Typically, the starter strip is a 1½″ inch wide and ¼″ to 5/16″ thick strip of fiber cement, wood, or vinyl, which is positioned towards the bottom of the sheathing so that the bottom edge of the lowermost siding panel will project at least ⅛″ below the bottom edge of the starter strip when installed on the building structure.

Simply go outside, grab the lower edges of a siding course and try to slide it back and forth (photo 1). For the best appearance, joints should be offset at least one. Cut this with tin snips so it is about 1/4 inch short between vinyl securing strips, and nail it in the center of the nailing slots.

Final part of the preliminary steps is the starter strip. Lay out the courses on the wall, using a chalk line to establish level reference lines. The product that is toenailed to the studs on the exterior side of the wall surface, supplying an area to fasten the siding and trim.

Determine the lowest point on the wall where the siding is to be installed. The horizontal lap is the most common and our main focus. Measure down from the soffit at one corner of the house to the top of the foundation and subtract 1/4” (6.4mm) less than the width of the starter strip.

Remove utility trim before installing siding panels. Then, measure up 1/4 inch less than the width of the starter strip, and mark your chalk line.
